Prince of Persia - Game StartPrince of Persia - 1Prince of Persia - 2
Prince of Persia for the PC was a classic game that everyone would get excited about once it came out. The reason for this was of course the brilliant, realistic 2D character animation which was considered a great achievement during that time. In this game you play as a persian prince on a quest to save the princess from an evil sultan. The gameplay is absolutely brilliant, combining the fluid animation with precisely timed action controls. The player could have mis-calculated the place from which to jump off by just a few pixels which would then result in the character's death, by falling off great heights, or even worse, onto strategically placed spikes. The gameplay consists of running, jumping, climbing and fighting the evil sultan Jaffar's guards. The game is linear, meaning if you lose all of your lives you have to start over and the sequence of actions you would have to do would be exactly the same. Many players would memorize these specific tactics and would replay the game again and again. Surprisingly enough, despite the game's linear plot and the dull gray and sand yellow colors throughout most of the levels, that tend to be very repetitive, the game still had a great replay value. Some of the challenges of this game are in precisely knowing what's awaiting you on the next screen which is sometimes was only possible by dying a lot and starting the game over again. While running through the castle the prince gets to fight with enemies such as sword or sable armed sultan's guards and even skeletons. Your character can be damaged by gates with sharp shark-like teeth that constantly open and close waiting for you to jump through just at the right moment. Some of the other gates open once the player steps or runs over a plate. These plates in the floor often act like triggers to open doors or make holes in the floor. Each part of the game is split into sections. At the end of each section there is a green door the prince must walk into to proceed to the next stage. The door sometimes mocks the player by showing up at the same screen, but not immediately reachable from that screen, making the prince think about how to get to that place by running around the level. Sometimes after the prince enters the exit door we see a small animation sequence showing the final room with the princess where she is sleeping or playing with her cat. After much fighting, jumping and solving lots of puzzles that require expert acrobatics skills, and previous experience with the game, the prince gets to the princess' room and rescues her. They hug and the game goes into the final scene that reads: "The tyrant Jaffar lies dead, his power shattered. Throughout the land the people of Persia hail their Princess... and the brave youth who saved her from the forces of darkness. No longer stranger, he shall from his day forth be known as... PRINCE OF PERSIA.
